Laser helps unlock antimatter secrets

In a major technological advance, physicists shone a laser on trapped anti-atoms to detect whether they behaved any differently to atoms.
The work could shed light on one of the enduring mysteries about antimatter.
Although the Big Bang produced matter and antimatter in equal amounts, today, the Universe overwhelmingly consists of matter - and current theories cannot explain why.

NEW voting system

NEW PUSH TO CHANGE VOTING TECHNOLOGY IN MINESOTA

More states are adopting touch-screen voting systems that can be used easily by voters. Some lawmakers would like to bring this technology to Minnesota. Others are reluctant to embrace the new technology.

Minnesota often leads the nation in voter turnout, but isn't always on the cutting edge of voting technology. One company wants to change that by convincing lawmakers touch screen voting is the wave of the future.

"The Express Vote (machine) is an assisted voting device that can also be used by other voters as well," said Mike Hoversten of Election Systems and Software. He points out that one machine can be used by voters of all abilities.

The Express Vote machine eventually produces a paper ballot, but it's smaller than the size of the ballot required by state law that is commonly used now. A change in state law would be required for counties to consider using the machine.

Minnesota uses paper ballots where voters fill in ovals and then put them in an optical scanning machine. Kiffmeyer said that system has worked well for a long time and has become a national model.

Express Vote gets the vote of the National Federation of the Blind as an easy-to-use system for visually impaired people because it can be used with a touch pad and headphones.

"There are lots of us in the National Federation of the Blind who've been testing these out, and they are easy to use," Judy Sanders of the federation's Minnesota office

The makers of Express Vote say their machines are in use in 28 states, including four counties in Minnesota. An effort will be made to offer an amendment to a state government or elections bill legalizing the smaller ballots before the end of the 2017 session.

Meet Gordon, your gleaming white robot barista

Startup Cafe X opens its first machine-operated cafe in San Francisco. Human baristas may shudder(estremecerse), but tech has been replacing humans for decades.
Robots welding cars in factories are a familiar sight. And now robots in the mall making coffee might become equally ordinary.
Startup Café X opens its first robotic cafe Monday in San Francisco's Metreon shopping center, a highly visible example of the increasing technological automation in our lives.

Resultado de imagen de Meet Gordon, your gleaming white robot baristathis is Gordon the machine.
Gordon can operate a pair of standard professional coffee machines to serve you premium-grade $2.25 espressos and $2.95 caffe lattes.

People say that Gordon, the robot barista is a novelty today, but smart machinery just like it will become downright ordinary as robots and artificial intelligence elbow in on human jobs.
"It requires fewer people to operate, but it doesn't mean we will have fewer people," Hu said. Still, his robots help with downsides of humans that cafe owners have told him about. "They have a difficult time hiring, training and maintaining their barista staff. It's actually a problem," he said

there is no video about Gordon through internet, but there are actually some robots that can give you the cup of coffee and so here is one of them: https://youtu.be/B2CNTV1QEEg

“En mi vida he pasado muchos momentos difíciles. Tengo una hermana que falleció con 26 años; hace 3 años perdí a mi niña y ese es el golpe más duro que vivido. No hay palabra para definir la muerte de un hijo.  He llorado de pena más de lo que yo quisiera pero bueno, también he llorado mucho de alegría. La música siempre ha sido mi y estar aquí para mí ya es un logro”.Aqui está una de noticia sobre la primera ganadora de La Voz.Nieves Hidalgo.

This is our scratch, we hope you like it :-)

    Here is our scratch.

    2016 warmest year ever

Globally, 2016 edged out 1998 by 0.02ºC to become the warmest year in the 38-year satellite temperature record,

According to scientists the margin of error is about 0.10 C, this would technically be a statistical tie, with a higher probability that 2016 was warmer than 1998. The main difference was the extra warmth in the Northern Hemisphere in 2016 compared to 1998.

    Polar bears

The toll, as a response to melting sea ice, would result in 8,600 less individuals from an estimated population of 26,000

An extensive study by the US Fish and Wildlife Service has predicted that in the next 35 to 41 years, polar bear populations across the Arctic could reduce by almost a third.

Such a toll has a 71 per cent likelihood of occurring, the study states, a prediction determined by averaging three possible scenarios of polar bear reactions to melting sea ice. Three were needed because polar bears are divided into 19 subpopulations across the region and are not all reacting to ice melt in the same way. Some subpopulations have shown declines, some show nutritional stress while others have been observed as being either productive or simply stable.

‘The data used in our study were obtained from long-term research programs on polar bears across their range,’ explains Kristin Laidre, a principal scientist at the Polar Science Center, University of Washington who contributed to the report. One of the three scenarios projected a proportional decline of bears with sea ice. The other two projected losses out of already observed changes to 11 of the 19 subpopulations. ‘Finally, we also used satellite data from NASA to look at the sea ice trends in each subpopulation,’ she says.

Polar bears use platforms of sea ice to hunt for seals. Because they hunt little else, reductions in sea ice can seriously impact their nutrition and the survival rate of cubs. The satellite data revealed that ice cover has declined in all 19 of these subpopulation ranges over the last 35 years. ‘Anthropogenic climate change is the primary threat to the species because, over the long-term, global temperatures will increase and Arctic sea ice will decrease as long as atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations continue to rise,’ the report states.
It concludes that its results are consistent with the polar bear having an IUCN listing of ‘vulnerable’.

    Instagram screenshots

Instagram will notify users if you take a screenshot of their private temporary message

This story is slightly true but also incredibly misleading. As our own Casey Newton noted in his update on Instagram stories, the photography platform will indeed alert users when someone has taken a screenshot but only when the photo or video is part of a temporary direct message sent through Instagram Direct. So if you’re deep into someone’s grid and screenshot a photo of them taking a shot of turkey fat, they won’t know. I promise. If, however, you screenshot a temporary photo your friend sent you directly, then yes, they will know. I promise.

As a reminder, stories are Instagram’s version of Snapchat. Videos, photos, and boomerangs can be added to temporary stories that disappear after 24 hours. The app now lets users send private temporary messages that disappear after they’ve been viewed.

Snapchat also sends screenshot alerts. Both platforms don’t want you capturing what are supposed to be ephemeral moments. Now just resist the urge to double tap on an ancient photo your secret internet obsession posted, and you’re good to go.
